People’s Party Chairman U Ko Ko Gyi has sent a letter on September 13 requesting relaxation of election procedures, aiming for a peaceful transition while facing difficulties in the military council’s election. In his letter to the military-controlled election commission, he stated that his party is participating in the military’s election to demonstrate a commitment to non-violent, peaceful transition.
The People’s Party requested extending the deadline for submitting parliamentary candidates to September 27, which is 90 days before the election, reducing the required number of candidates to one-third of all constituencies, and allowing online procedures for townships with difficult access. Currently, while emergency rule has been declared in 63 townships and elections can only be held in 267 townships, the election commission has designated 833 constituencies based on 330 townships.
U Ko Ko Gyi pointed out that although the Political Party Registration Law has relaxed the requirement for party offices from more than half to one-third of all townships, the requirement to contest more than half of all constituencies based on 330 townships presents significant practical challenges. He emphasized the difficulties in meeting these requirements given the current security, financial, and transportation challenges faced by political parties.
