UNICEF has issued a statement expressing grave concern over the attack on a school in Thayet Pine village, Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of students. The statement, released on September 12, detailed how students were killed and wounded while sleeping. The attack resulted in 19 children dead and 22 injured.
In its statement, UNICEF highlighted the escalating violence in Rakhine State due to indiscriminate attacks, noting the growing fear and losses faced by families, and the deepening suffering of communities. The organization pointed out that children are losing their lives in places that should be safe havens for them, including homes, schools, and their surrounding environments. The intensifying violence and displacement have left families across Rakhine State facing severe hardships, as emphasized in the statement.
Furthermore, UNICEF stressed the emerging food scarcity in the region and the breakdown of essential services such as education and healthcare. The organization strongly urged for an immediate end to violence against children, emphasizing that schools, dormitories, homes, and spaces for children must remain safe at all times. The statement also reminded conflict parties of their obligations under international law to protect civilians, including children, preserve civilian infrastructure, and ensure access to life-saving humanitarian assistance for those in urgent need.
