Three Myanmar nationals were found dead in Thailand’s Kanchanaburi province after drowning while attempting to illegally enter the country by boat. The decomposed bodies were discovered in the Vajiralongkorn reservoir in Kanchanaburi province at 11:35 AM on September 12. The deceased were part of a larger group of 22 Myanmar nationals who had attempted to enter Thailand illegally on the night of September 9. Local authorities confirmed that the tragic incident occurred when their boat struck a tree stump in the reservoir, causing the victims to fall overboard.
The recovered bodies consisted of two men and one woman, all of whom were identified as Myanmar nationals attempting to cross into Thailand without proper documentation. The bodies have been transferred to Sanchaburi Hospital for autopsy and further investigation. The Sanchaburi Police Station is currently conducting a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. This particular water route, which connects from the Three Pagodas Pass area of Myanmar to Thailand’s Kanchanaburi province, is frequently used by migrants attempting to enter Thailand illegally.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing crisis of illegal border crossings from Myanmar into Thailand, as many Myanmar citizens continue to flee their country due to the current political and economic situation. The waterway where the incident occurred is known to be a common but dangerous route for illegal entry into Thailand. The desperate measures taken by these individuals reflect the broader humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where people are forced to risk their lives seeking better opportunities abroad due to economic hardship, lack of employment opportunities, and security concerns stemming from the military takeover of their country. Local authorities are continuing their investigation to gather more details about the incident and to identify any potential human trafficking networks that might be involved in facilitating these dangerous border crossings.
