According to a statement from Myanmar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, the UN Credentials Committee has been formed with nine member nations to determine the continued status of Myanmar’s Representative Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun. The committee comprises Andorra, Botswana, China, Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. This committee formation took place during the 80th UN General Assembly session which began on September 9.
The Myanmar delegation led by Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun attended the 79th UN General Assembly sessions, participating in both the General Assembly plenary meetings and meetings of six main committees, delivering approximately 60 speeches. Additionally, during the Second Part of the Session from early January 2025 to September 9, the delegation continued to participate in plenary meetings and deliver addresses. The delegation has been actively involved in various UN forums, including Security Council open meetings, Economic and Social Council meetings, and sessions related to development, children’s rights, and women’s issues.
During these meetings, the delegation addressed various aspects of Myanmar’s current situation, including human rights violations by the military regime against civilians, violent attacks on the population, and the Myanmar people’s efforts to establish a federal democratic union. Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun and his team have consistently used these platforms to highlight the ongoing crisis in Myanmar and the people’s struggle for democracy. Their presentations have covered comprehensive updates on the situation while maintaining focus on the humanitarian aspects and the democratic aspirations of the Myanmar people.
Currently, there is significant public support both within Myanmar and internationally for Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun to continue as Myanmar’s representative. This support has manifested through various demonstrations, protests, solidarity marches, and signature campaigns. The newly formed UN Credentials Committee’s decision will play a crucial role in determining Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun’s future status as Myanmar’s representative at the United Nations, amid ongoing support from the public for his continued representation of Myanmar’s democratic interests in the international forum.
