Kim Aris, son of Aung San Suu Kyi, has demanded direct contact with his mother following conflicting reports about her health condition. This comes after his September 5 statement expressing concern about her severe heart condition and the military’s refusal to allow her to be examined by a cardiac specialist. The military spokesperson responded by claiming these reports about her ill health were false, prompting Kim Aris to call for immediate verification of her condition through direct communication.
Kim Aris expressed deep concern about his 80-year-old mother’s health, emphasizing that her detention conditions in prison would inevitably affect her well-being. He strongly criticized the military’s restrictions on family visits, legal counsel access, and independent medical examinations, declaring these limitations unacceptable. He stressed that his mother’s basic human rights were being violated and that both the Myanmar people and the international community have a right to know her true condition. He emphasized that his mother deserves to live with truth, freedom, and dignity, describing the denial of these fundamental rights as an undeniable act of cruelty.
Following the military coup on February 1, 2021, the military detained Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, subsequently imposing lengthy prison sentences through unjust charges. The military has systematically removed public leaders from public view, controlled information flow, and violated basic human rights. Kim Aris referenced his grandfather, General Aung San, who sacrificed his life for the country’s independence, and expressed his deep concern that his mother, who has dedicated herself to the country’s peace, progress, justice, and democracy, might die in unjust imprisonment. He emphasized that his mother continues to work for peace, progress, justice, and democracy in the country, and that he does not want her to die in prison where she is being unjustly detained.
