Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is reportedly suffering from severe heart disease, and despite requests for examination by a cardiac specialist, the military council has denied such medical access. The 80-year-old leader has been detained since the military coup in February 2021 and is currently being held in a remote prison in Naypyidaw. Her deteriorating health condition has raised significant concerns among her family members and the international community.
Her son, Kim Aris, has expressed deep worry about his mother’s worsening health condition and has called for international intervention to ensure she receives emergency medical treatment. According to reports, her heart condition has become increasingly severe, and while there have been requests for consultation with a private cardiac specialist outside the prison, no permission has been granted thus far. The military council appears to be deliberately attempting to end Aung San Suu Kyi’s political role by keeping her in detention under various unjust charges.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has demanded the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, calling for the restoration of peace and democracy that the people of Myanmar deserve. The Independent newspaper has characterized the military’s treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi, including the multiple charges against her and her detention, as a blatant injustice. The current situation regarding her health remains critical, with growing concerns about her need for urgent medical attention, which continues to be denied by the military authorities who have imprisoned her in a remote facility away from adequate medical care.
