According to local military sources, Major Thant Naing Tun, Deputy Battalion Commander of Infantry Battalion 63, died after stepping on a mine laid by their own troops during operations in Thabaung Township, Ayeyarwady Region. The incident occurred on August 28 when the battalion was conducting operations near Thazin village and Kyarkaung village. During the advance near the frontline at Thazin village, the commander stepped on a mine that had been previously planted by military forces. The explosion resulted in severe injuries, including a severed heel.
The situation was exacerbated by the absence of a medical officer in the military column at the time of the incident. Due to this lack of immediate medical attention, Major Thant Naing Tun suffered significant blood loss. While being transported to Military Medical Battalion 4 at the Southwest Command headquarters in Pathein, he succumbed to his injuries en route. His remains are scheduled to be cremated at the Shwe Myint Tin crematorium on September 2. According to local military sources, Major Thant Naing Tun had planned to lead operations from Thabaung Township to Gwa Town, but his mission was cut short by his death.
Additionally, on August 30, another military casualty was reported when an army captain, who was receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the Ayeyarwady battlefield, died at the Military Medical Battalion 4 of the Southwest Command headquarters in Pathein Township. His body was also cremated at the Shwe Myint Tin crematorium. These incidents highlight the ongoing military activities in the Ayeyarwady Region and the casualties sustained by military council forces, often due to their own defensive measures backfiring against them.
