A clash between People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and military council troops occurred in Bagan city, Mandalay Region, on August 27, resulting in the death of two military council soldiers, according to local residents and a PDF official from Nyaung-U District. The confrontation took place near Shin Phyu Taw Grocery Store in downtown Bagan, where three resistance fighters from the Pakokku area engaged with military council troops. The revolutionary forces successfully withdrew from the area without sustaining any casualties.
Following the incident, the military council deployed hundreds of troops throughout Bagan, establishing checkpoints at city entrances and exits while conducting strict inspections of vehicles and travelers. Local residents report that suspicious individuals are being detained for questioning, though most are released after interrogation. The heightened security measures have significantly impacted local civilians’ movement and business operations in the area. The military’s presence has created difficulties for daily activities and commerce in the region.
Prior to this incident, on June 1 of this year, another significant event occurred in Bagan New Town’s Gantgaw Ward, where Zaw Zaw, a leader of the military-affiliated Pyu Saw Htee group, and eight of his followers were killed during an attack while they were extorting money from local residents at a rest house. Following that incident, the military council also intensified security measures in the region and increased oppression against civilians, according to local residents. These recent events highlight the ongoing tension and conflict in the Bagan area, where resistance forces continue to operate against military council control.
