Two people have died and numerous homes were swept away by flash floods in Naypyidaw’s Pyinmana Township and Pinlaung New Town near the southern Shan State border, according to humanitarian workers providing assistance in the area. Heavy rainfall beginning on the evening of August 26 led to sudden flash floods around 2 AM on August 27, primarily affecting Eden village in the Thapyaykone village tract of Pinlaung New Town, Pinlaung Township. The flooding resulted in casualties and widespread damage to residential areas.
According to a humanitarian worker, the flash floods suddenly swept through the village in the early morning hours, resulting in two deaths and approximately five injuries, with some people reported missing. While many houses were swept away en masse, most residents managed to evacuate in time. The previous day’s heavy rainfall and mountain runoff also caused flooding in Pyinmana and Pyinmana townships in Naypyidaw, requiring the evacuation of hundreds of residents from low-lying areas, as reported by humanitarian groups.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has reported that remnants of Typhoon Kajiki from the South China Sea are crossing into Myanmar, leading to predictions of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds across the country from August 27 to September 1. As a result, citizens throughout the country need to remain vigilant against potential natural disasters. The current weather conditions have created particularly dangerous situations in mountainous regions and low-lying areas, with continued risks of flash floods and landslides.
