A protest against the military dictatorship and illegal elections was held in Yinmabin Township, Sagaing Region, on August 26. Revolutionary students and civilians from the northern villages of Yinmabin Township bravely took to the streets despite the ongoing instability in the area. The protesters carried signs demanding public opposition to the illegal sham election and warning against legitimizing violence through voting.
Participants in the protest emphasized that elections under the military dictatorship would not reflect the true will of the people and would only serve to legitimize the junta’s acts of violence. Yinmabin Township has been continuously subjected to military council oppression since the coup, with local civilians facing arrests, killings, and destruction of property through arson by the violent military council.
The protesters demanded an end to the military dictatorship, the establishment of a federal democratic system, and opposition to the illegal election. They also warned that voting in elections under military rule would amount to legitimizing the violent military council and sacrificing civilian lives. The protest was successfully conducted and received support from local residents. The demonstrators highlighted that any election held under military rule would only serve to validate their continued oppression of the civilian population while failing to represent genuine democratic expression.
