Justice For Myanmar (JFM) has called for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for military leader Min Aung Hlaing, the perpetrator of the Rohingya genocide in Rakhine State, and take action against KBZ and Max companies who provided financial support. This demand was made today on the 8th anniversary of the Rohingya genocide. In 2017, the Myanmar military conducted a genocide against the Rohingya people in northern Rakhine State, resulting in thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.
During that time, numerous companies and organizations directly donated millions of dollars to support the military junta’s ‘clearance operations,’ which was documented by the UN Fact-Finding Mission (FFM). Notably, military-affiliated crony companies KBZ and Max made substantial financial contributions to construct border fencing to prevent Rohingya refugees from returning to their homes. The FFM has indicated that these companies were directly involved in crimes against humanity. The companies provided significant financial support for the construction of border barriers specifically designed to prevent displaced Rohingya refugees from returning to their homes in Myanmar, effectively making them complicit in the ongoing persecution.
After eight years, these companies have still not been held accountable and continue to profit from ongoing international crimes. Justice has been denied for years, and this impunity has only emboldened the military regime and its financial backers to commit further atrocities. Currently, the Rohingya continue to face severe international crimes by the Myanmar military junta and Arakan Army, as highlighted by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The international community must take action to protect the Rohingya and ensure accountability for all perpetrators from the Myanmar military junta and its associated forces. The UN High Commissioner has emphasized the need for full accountability and justice for these ongoing violations of international law.
