A military checkpoint operated by the military council in Donsarit village, Shwegyin Township, Bago Region, was attacked by the People’s United Front and local resistance forces, resulting in the death of two soldiers including one military officer. The attack occurred at approximately 3:10 AM on August 24, 2023, targeting a fixed checkpoint of Infantry Battalion 589. The joint operation was carried out by the People’s United Front Unit 81 in coordination with local revolutionary forces.
During the engagement, two military personnel, including one officer, were killed, and approximately ten others were wounded on the military council’s side. The resistance forces successfully withdrew from the area without suffering any casualties, according to Ko Khant Thaw, spokesperson for the People’s United Front. While the checkpoint typically maintains a garrison of seven to ten soldiers, at the time of the attack, there were at least 15 personnel present, including two intoxicated officers. The firefight lasted approximately 20 minutes, during which the resistance forces successfully executed their operation.
The military checkpoint had been a source of oppression for local civilians, engaging in various forms of harassment including blocking village connection roads, unlawfully arresting and extorting money from travelers, forcefully collecting protection money, and coercing young people into military service. These actions by the military council forces prompted the attack by resistance forces. According to confirmed reports, the resistance forces successfully carried out their mission against the checkpoint, which had been a significant point of military control and civilian suppression in the area.
