A representative from the Kyunhla Activists Group has confirmed that the military forces conducting operations in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region, have arrested and killed U Maung Maung, a resident of Kyachat Aik village. On August 20, around 6 AM, a military column of approximately 70 personnel from the Koetaungbo Htaing camp in Kanbalu Township entered Kyachat Aik village and subsequently arrested and killed 45-year-old U Maung Maung.
During the military’s entry into the village, many villagers were trapped and unable to escape, leading to multiple arrests by the armed forces. The soldiers also forcibly confiscated civilian property from within the village, according to local residents. U Maung Maung encountered the military column while heading to the forest early in the morning and was shot twice in the forehead near the paved road, resulting in his death.
The military forces remained stationed in Kyachat Aik village for one night, and around 2 AM on August 21, they released the detained villagers before returning to their Koetaungbo Htaing camp. Activists have pointed out that this incident represents one of many crimes being committed by the military forces against innocent civilians, highlighting the ongoing threat to the security, lives, and property of local residents in the region.
