Local residents have reported that Infantry Battalion 1, based in Seikanthlan village in Minhla Township, Bago Region, has been digging trenches and planting landmines around their battalion compound due to fears of attacks from People’s Defense Force (PDF) units. These fortification activities began in June of this year, with the trench digging now completed and numerous landmines being actively planted. Additionally, the military is reportedly using excavators to destroy connecting roads between Seikanthlan village and nearby villages.
According to local sources, Infantry Battalion 1 is severely understaffed, with most of its soldiers deployed to frontline positions. The battalion currently only houses military wives and injured soldiers. Due to this reduced manpower, they are unable to effectively defend against potential PDF attacks, which has led to their decision to fortify the compound with trenches and landmines. The extensive defensive measures reflect the battalion’s vulnerable position and limited combat capabilities.
A local resident detailed that the battalion is now primarily occupied by widows and injured soldiers, highlighting their defensive vulnerability. The informant explained that the military began digging trenches in June out of fear of PDF attacks, and now that the excavation work is complete, they have planted numerous landmines throughout the dug areas. The destruction of village connecting roads using excavators continues, further isolating the communities in the area. These actions demonstrate the military’s defensive posture and their attempts to create buffer zones around their weakened position.
