
According to the National Unity Government’s announcement, an earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude struck near Yangon, following another quake measuring 4.8 magnitude the previous evening. The 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 9:28 AM Myanmar Standard Time on August 21, with its epicenter located 66 kilometers south-southeast of Thongwa town in Yangon Region, near Myanmar’s southern coast, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor caused significant concern among residents in Yangon and surrounding areas.
A resident from Khayan Township in Yangon Region reported feeling notable shaking around 9:30 AM, with buildings swaying during the event. In Thingangyun Township, residents evacuated from high-rise buildings due to the tremors. A local from Thuwunna New Town reported that people were shouting and running for safety, with some experiencing dizziness during the earthquake. The seismic activity created widespread anxiety among the population, though initial reports indicated no major structural damage.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology also reported that another earthquake of magnitude 4.8 had struck in the Myanmar Sea near Yangon the previous evening at 7:16 PM. A resident from Min Road in Sanchaung Township mentioned that while they didn’t notice the evening earthquake, the morning tremor was distinctly felt. According to preliminary reports, no casualties or significant property damage were reported from either earthquake. The seismic events have heightened awareness about earthquake preparedness among Yangon residents, particularly those living in high-rise buildings and densely populated areas.
