The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a warning against participation in the military council’s illegal activities, as the Karen National Union (KNU), Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Arakan Army (AA), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), and other ethnic armed organizations along with Spring Revolution forces have already declared their rejection of the military’s sham election. This statement was made by NUG spokesperson U Nay Boon Latt during a message to the public and international community.
The ethnic armed organizations have officially announced that they will not allow the military council to conduct its illegitimate election within their controlled territories. The NUG stands in solidarity with its ethnic allies and revolutionary forces, emphasizing that the military’s election is an illegal act and warning those who might participate or support it to be cautious. U Nay Boon Latt stressed that the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), formed based on the results of the 2020 election, had already abolished the 2008 Constitution on March 30, 2021. Therefore, any actions taken by the military council under this constitution, including the upcoming sham election, are considered illegal and illegitimate.
The military council’s fake election is merely a facade aimed at maintaining their power and seeking impunity for their war crimes against civilians. The NUG continues to work alongside its ethnic allies toward building a Federal Democratic Union. The military has announced plans to hold the first phase of elections starting December 28, with subsequent phases to follow. U Nay Boon Latt emphasized that this is nothing more than an attempt by the terrorist military group to legitimize their rule and escape accountability for the war crimes they have committed and continue to commit against the people of Myanmar. He urged all revolutionary forces to stand united with the people in opposing this trap set by the military council.
