The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People’s Defense Force (KPDF) joint forces have successfully captured military camps in Mainnaung and Mamunkine villages in the Indawgyi region of Mohnyin Township, Kachin State. These camps had been occupied for one month by the military council forces and their affiliated Shanni Nationalities Army (SNA). The seizure occurred on August 15, despite the military council’s day-long aerial support and resistance. According to KIA military sources, the joint forces managed to completely capture both camps despite heavy resistance from military airstrikes.
Additionally, KIA and KPDF forces have been engaged in a month-long blockade operation against a military reinforcement column of approximately 500 troops along the Hpakant-Namyar road, resulting in intense battles. Fighting continues daily in Hpakant city between the military council forces and the combined KIA-KPDF forces, with significant casualties reported on the military side. On August 15 and 16, the military council conducted airstrikes and artillery attacks on a company compound near Hmwebon village and Hpwet Nan Kaung village, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old security guard.
From June through August, the military council’s deliberate attacks with heavy weapons on civilian areas where no fighting was taking place have resulted in at least 65 civilian deaths and approximately 230 injuries, according to documented records. The ongoing conflicts around Hpakant have now continued for about two months, with daily exchanges of artillery fire and drone attacks between the military council forces, their affiliated militia, and the combined KIA-KPDF forces. The military has suffered significant losses in the Hpakant battles, while continuing to launch attacks on civilian areas with heavy weapons and aerial bombardment.
