Police sources have confirmed that Police Station Chief Myo Kyaw Thu of Taunggyi City’s No. 2 Police Station in Shan State has been forcing patrol officers to collect more than 30 million kyats monthly under the pretext of station expenses. The officers are compelled to gather these funds through illegal means, including drug trafficking, and face physical abuse and threats of dismissal if they fail to meet the specified amount.
Station Chief Myo Kyaw Thu has also stationed his brother-in-law, a member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), along with two patrol officers at the Yepyay checkpoint near Palilinn village to collect money from timber trucks, generating at least 2 million kyats daily. With these illicitly obtained funds, he has purchased land worth 200 million kyats in Palilinn village, vehicles worth 350 million kyats, and jewelry worth over 70 million kyats for his wife, Daw Thway Thway Oo.
At Taunggyi’s No. 2 Police Station, detainees are required to pay 1 million kyats to avoid transfer to prison, while being served poor quality food at exorbitant prices. Despite numerous complaints to higher authorities about Station Chief Myo Kyaw Thu’s illegal activities, the cases are consistently dismissed through monetary influence, according to police sources who have exposed these corrupt practices.
