A drone strike on the men’s ward of Mandalay’s Obo Prison resulted in the deaths of 21 people, including 17 political prisoners and 4 other inmates, with at least 10 others injured, according to confirmation from the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM). The incident occurred on August 8 at 10 AM when two drone bombs struck the facility. Due to the prison being under military council control, details about the group responsible for the drone attack remain difficult to verify, and investigations are ongoing.
Ko Thike Tun Oo, a central committee member of PPNM, explained that the purpose of releasing this information was to prevent unreported killings and concerning situations within the prison. Despite the military council’s denials, PPNM has released detailed information including the names, ages, and charges of those who died in the attack. The organization, comprised of former political prisoners working without compensation, remains committed to documenting and reporting such incidents despite the challenging circumstances in revolutionary territories.
