According to a statement released by the Humanitarian Development Coordination Office (HDCO) of the Arakan People’s Authority, flooding during June and July 2025 in Rakhine State has resulted in 21 deaths and affected over 40,000 civilians. The flooding occurred across eight townships in Rakhine State, including Thandwe, Kyaukphyu, Ponnagyun, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Buthidaung, Maungdaw, and Rathedaung, due to heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding and inundation.
The floods have impacted 165 villages across these townships, causing damage to homes, paddy fields, wells, reservoirs, and infrastructure. A total of 9,761 households comprising 42,459 individuals have been affected, with 53 houses and 2 IDP camp offices destroyed. In the agricultural sector, 18,823.12 acres of cultivated farmland were submerged and destroyed. Additionally, thousands of livestock including chickens, ducks, cattle, and pigs have perished in the floods. The infrastructure damage has been particularly severe in Kyaukphyu, Ponnagyun, Minbya, Buthidaung, and Maungdaw townships, where 13 roads and bridges have been destroyed, along with 18 public wells and reservoirs.
The death toll of 21 people resulted from drowning and being swept away by flood currents while traveling through flooded areas. The current situation requires increased emergency assistance for flood victims, and HDCO has announced that it will continue to intensify emergency relief efforts in cooperation with relevant organizations and donors to support the affected populations. The scale of destruction and loss of life highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in the region, as communities struggle to cope with the aftermath of these severe flooding events.
