The National League for Democracy’s Central Youth Affairs leader Ma Moe Sann Su Kyi, who was due to be released from Thayarwaddy Prison after completing her sentence, has been immediately re-arrested at the prison gate under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. NLD sources have confirmed that she is being denied both prison visits and family meetings.
Ma Moe Sann Su Kyi was initially arrested on May 9, 2021, in Yangon’s Hledan Township and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment at Insein Prison under Sections 505-a and 17(1). After serving over four years of her unjust imprisonment, she was set to be released on August 7 when she completed her sentence. However, she was immediately re-arrested at the prison gate under the Counter-Terrorism Law. Currently, she is being denied all visitation rights, including both prison visits and family meetings.
According to an NLD source, Ma Moe Sann Su Kyi will have to face the new charges while remaining in prison, and the current section under which she has been charged could result in additional years of imprisonment. However, it has been reported that her health condition remains good and her spirit remains strong despite the circumstances. Ma Moe Sann Su Kyi is also the daughter of U Nyi Pu, the former Chief Minister of Rakhine State, who is currently being unjustly detained by the military at Insein Prison.
The military council has been deliberately re-arresting political prisoners at prison gates upon their release, filing various new charges against them. According to the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM), the total number of individuals who have been re-arrested at prison gates, including Ma Moe Sann Su Kyi, has now reached 74. This pattern demonstrates the military council’s systematic approach to keeping political prisoners detained through continuous cycles of arrests and charges, even after they complete their original sentences.
