The Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) has issued a statement during their 77th Karenni National Resistance Day ceremony, expressing opposition to the military council’s sham election and new government formation. The statement emphasizes the need to resist the military’s political deception in the form of a fake election and to uproot the new government led by Min Aung Hlaing.
The KNPP stated that since the 2008 Constitution has been completely rejected by the public and revolutionary forces, any attempt to revive it must be opposed. They stressed that the military’s politically manipulative sham election, which lacks freedom and fairness, must be resisted and prevented. The statement particularly emphasizes the importance of opposing these undemocratic initiatives that seek to legitimize military rule.
Furthermore, the statement addresses Min Aung Hlaing’s recent political maneuvers, including the dissolution of the State Administration Council and the formation of the State Security and Peace Commission. The KNPP criticizes how Min Aung Hlaing continues to hold multiple positions – as Chairman, Acting President, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces with the rank of Senior General – in the newly formed National Defense and Security Council government. The statement calls for the complete dismantling of this new governmental structure, viewing it as another attempt to entrench military rule.
The Karenni National Progressive Party has declared its commitment to permanently ending the military dictatorship system that has destroyed the country for decades. They have outlined their approach to building a federal democratic union through what they term as ‘Bottom-Up Federalism,’ which emphasizes strengthening federal units based on the will and participation of states and their peoples. The KNPP has explicitly stated their intention to work alongside other revolutionary forces throughout the revolutionary period until the establishment of a future federal democratic union, emphasizing the importance of collective action in achieving their goals for democratic transformation.
