Myanmar people residing in Japan gathered in Tokyo to hold a global 8888 umbrella protest movement and anti-military dictatorship demonstration to mark the 37th anniversary of the 8888 uprising. This movement serves both to honor the historical significance of the 1988 uprising and to protest against the current military dictatorship in Myanmar.
During the umbrella protest in Tokyo, Myanmar citizens carried black and yellow umbrellas as they demonstrated against the military dictatorship. Participants in the umbrella movement also held signs demanding democracy, human rights, and freedom, while images of Myanmar’s democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi were also visible throughout the demonstration.
This umbrella protest movement is part of an international effort to draw global attention to the political crisis and human rights violations occurring in Myanmar following the military coup. The Myanmar community in Japan has consistently supported the Myanmar people’s struggle for democracy and actively participates in anti-military dictatorship movements. The demonstration reflects the ongoing solidarity of Myanmar people abroad with those continuing to resist military rule in their homeland.
