
On August 8, 2023, a coordinated umbrella strike protest was held in Kani Township, Sagaing Region, to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the historic 8888 People’s Uprising. The protest was jointly organized by the Kani Township Strike Leading Committee, Women’s Alliance of Burma (WAB), and the Kani Township People’s Administration Team.
Protesters carried banners with the slogan ‘Unfinished 8888, People’s Liberation – We Fight Together’ and delivered speeches about the historical significance of the 8888 Uprising. The demonstrators also spoke out against the military council’s planned illegal sham elections, emphasizing the continued resistance against military rule. The protest highlighted the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights in Myanmar, with participants expressing their determination to continue opposing the military dictatorship.
The umbrella strike demonstration served as a powerful symbol of public unity against the military regime, with local residents, youth, and women participating in the peaceful protest.
