The Dagon University Students’ Union has awarded the Student Martyr title to Ma Wut Yee Aung, a former central executive member who died in Insein Prison in Yangon. She succumbed to head injuries sustained during interrogation by the military council and lack of proper medical treatment while in detention. Ma Wut Yee Aung had served as the Joint Secretary of the Dagon University Students’ Union since 2020, where she was known for her dedication to student activism and public service.
During the COVID-19 period, Ma Wut Yee Aung actively worked for public welfare. Following the military coup, she joined the frontlines of resistance against the military dictatorship, carrying the Fighting Peacock flag – a symbol of student resistance. From the time of her arrest until her death, she continued to oppose the military junta and its mechanisms in various forms, as stated in the announcement by the Dagon University Students’ Union. The Union emphasized that her revolutionary spirit and dedication to the cause of democracy would be remembered and honored.
A representative from the Dagon University Students’ Union stated that they would continue to carry forward Ma Wut Yee Aung’s revolutionary ideals and fight until the end of the revolution. They also affirmed their commitment to ensuring that those responsible for her death would not escape justice. The Union plans to formally present the Student Martyr title to her family in a ceremony to be held in the presence of students, teachers, and the public once the state of emergency is lifted or when the Spring Revolution succeeds. This recognition will be permanently recorded in both the University Archives and the Students’ Union Archives as a testament to her sacrifice and dedication to the cause of democracy in Myanmar.
