A brutal incident by the military council forces has been reported in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region. According to local residents’ testimonies confirmed by the Karen National Union (KNU) Myeik-Dawei District, military forces from Infantry Battalion 282 arrested and killed a civilian near a gas pipeline within their area of control, leaving the body abandoned. The incident highlights the ongoing violence against civilians by military forces in the region.
The discovery was made on July 22, 2023, when local residents found the body of an unidentified man near the gas pipeline within the territory of Infantry Battalion 282, which is based in Kaleinaung town in the Thavokyee village tract of Yebyu Township. The location where the body was found is approximately 2,000 meters from the rear headquarters of Infantry Battalion 282, within an area under direct military security control. This proximity to the military installation raises serious questions about the circumstances of the killing.
Local sources confirmed military personnel movements in the area on July 20, with residents reporting that military council soldiers had detained, interrogated, and brutally killed a villager whom they deemed suspicious. The identity and residential details of the murdered individual are currently under investigation. The KNU Myeik-Dawei District has issued a warning to civilians living in areas of military tension to exercise extreme caution regarding military council troop movements and maintain vigilance in their daily activities. This incident represents another example of the military council’s continued use of violence against civilians in their areas of control.
