The National Unity Government’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management has confirmed that an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck near Kyaukse city in Mandalay Region at 2:29 PM on July 20. The earthquake, which had its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, was strongly felt by local residents in the area. During the seismic event, people were forced to evacuate their homes and experienced significant concern for their safety.
According to a local resident from Kyaukse Township, the earthquake’s impact was particularly noticeable in the urban areas, with buildings experiencing visible shaking. This earthquake is believed by experts to be one of the aftershocks following the major 7.7 magnitude Sagaing earthquake that occurred on March 28. Since that major seismic event, more than 210 aftershocks have been recorded to date. The continuous sequence of aftershocks has kept local communities in a state of heightened awareness regarding seismic activity in the region.
The National Unity Government has issued safety advisories for public security and well-being, urging residents to remain vigilant due to the possibility of continued aftershocks. They have provided detailed guidelines on safety measures to reduce potential losses and damage from earthquake hazards, including specific instructions on what to do and what to avoid during seismic events. Additionally, they have published emergency contact numbers for the public to use in case of emergencies. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and has emphasized the importance of following established safety protocols to minimize the impact of potential future seismic activities in the region.
