A significant attack occurred at the Aviation Training School in Mingaladon Township, Yangon, during military council leader Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to the 78th Martyrs’ Day ceremony. According to a representative from the Yangon Army, the attack was jointly carried out by the Yangon Army and the Western District People’s Defense Force. The incident took place on July 18 at 7:15 PM, involving high-powered remote-controlled mines combined with hand grenades.
The attack resulted in one military council member being injured, prompting immediate response from military forces who established checkpoints and road closures throughout Mingaladon Township and Yangon’s entry points. The Yangon Army representative confirmed that the attack produced a powerful explosion and caused significant disruption to military council operations. The timing of the attack was deliberately chosen to coincide with Min Aung Hlaing’s presence in the area, demonstrating a strategic approach by the resistance forces.
In response to the Martyrs’ Day ceremony, the military council implemented temporary communication and internet blackouts in areas around the Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Bahan Township and parts of Sanchaung Township. Security measures were intensified throughout Yangon. While Min Aung Hlaing attended the Martyrs’ Day ceremony, public opposition remained strong, manifesting in various forms of resistance including this attack. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between the military council and the civilian population, who continue to live under severe restrictions and threats, unable to freely commemorate even significant national days under the military council’s oppressive rule.
