
A 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered near Shwebo city in Sagaing Region was strongly felt across multiple cities including Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Sagaing, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and local residents’ reports. The earthquake occurred around 4 PM on July 18, with its epicenter located approximately 35 kilometers east-northeast of Shwebo. Local residents reported that the earthquake was notably strong with prolonged shaking and swaying movements.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the military council, the earthquake measured 5.5 in magnitude and was centered about 6 miles northwest of Mattaya city. The tremors were distinctly felt not only in Sagaing, Naypyidaw, Depaeyin, and Ye-U areas but also in the northern Shan State region including Lashio, as confirmed by local residents. The seismic activity was reported to be clearly noticeable across these regions.
Additionally, two more earthquakes were recorded in the Naypyidaw area on the same day. The first occurred at 10:42 AM, measuring 3.1 in magnitude, with its epicenter approximately 3 miles northwest of Pyinmana city. The second earthquake struck at 1:39 PM, registering 3.6 in magnitude, centered about 19 miles northeast of Tatkon city. These seismic events were part of a series of earthquakes that have been occurring in the region.
