The Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the military council has issued a statement expressing disappointment over the United Nations’ failure to recognize their claimed efforts for peace and stability in Myanmar. This response came following discussions about Myanmar at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council on July 10.
The military council claims they are actively working on post-earthquake reconstruction efforts while simultaneously pursuing stability, security, development, and what they term as democratic processes. They state they are planning to hold elections and have invited armed groups to participate in the political process. The council also claims to be organizing economic and peace forums for national reconciliation.
However, the military council expresses particular disappointment that the UN, as an organization of which Myanmar is a member, fails to acknowledge these claimed initiatives. They argue that such actions by the UN contradict its principles of fairness, impartiality, respect for member states’ rights, and transparency.
The military council criticizes the UN for targeting a single country instead of prioritizing global issues such as conflicts, natural disasters, pandemics, peace, security, and development matters. They argue this approach undermines member states’ confidence in the UN. As a UN member state, they claim Myanmar will continue to adhere to the UN Charter’s basic principles and urge the international community to recognize and participate in what they call Myanmar-led processes regarding the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and domestic affairs.
