The Defend Myanmar Democracy organization has announced that they have sent a letter to Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Global Affairs President, requesting immediate action to ban the remaining Facebook pages controlled by the terrorist military council. According to the organization’s statement, despite Meta’s promise over two years ago to remove military group activities from their platforms, numerous Facebook pages under military council control continue to operate.
The investigation has revealed that Facebook pages belonging to military council-controlled entities such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Anti-Corruption Commission, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, Forestry Department, Mining Sector, Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development, and Naypyitaw Development Committee continue to spread military propaganda. Through these pages, the military group attempts to legitimize their illegal actions and cover up their oppression of the people, as pointed out by the Defend Myanmar Democracy organization.
Although Meta banned accounts and pages associated with the Myanmar military following the coup, the continued allowance of certain government department pages indirectly supports the military group’s oppressive administration. The Defend Myanmar Democracy organization emphasizes the urgent need to shut down all remaining military council-controlled Facebook pages, as these platforms are being used for propaganda distribution, legitimizing the military council’s actions, and providing support for the terrorist military group’s activities. The organization stresses that allowing these pages to remain active contradicts Meta’s initial commitment to prevent the military from using their platforms to spread misinformation and propaganda.
