The National Unity Government (NUG) has called on the entire population to oppose the illegal sham election planned by the terrorist military council. During a press briefing to the public and international community on July 1, NUG Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson U Nay Boon Latt stated that the military group is attempting to illegitimately seize people’s power and therefore has no authority to conduct elections. He emphasized that the results of the 2020 general election remain politically legitimate, and the legislative and administrative pillars that emerged from that election continue to stand firmly.
U Nay Boon Latt explained that the military group’s attempts to hold an illegal sham election against the will of the people not only violates democratic principles but also represents an attempt to illegitimately seize the people’s sovereign power. He further noted that the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) had officially abolished the 2008 Constitution on March 30, 2021, rendering all actions by the military under that constitution illegal and without legitimacy. He stressed that the illegal sham election is not a solution to Myanmar’s current situation.
The spokesperson clarified that revolutionary forces will continue to proceed according to their main political roadmap, which includes the Federal Democracy Charter and political roadmap. He emphasized that all actions by the military operating under the now-abolished constitution are illegal and illegitimate. The NUG strongly urged the entire population to collectively oppose and refuse to cooperate with the military council’s illegal sham election, as it represents an attempt to legitimize their illegal seizure of power rather than a genuine democratic process.
The NUG’s statement reflects the ongoing crisis in Myanmar since the military coup, highlighting the continued resistance against the military council’s attempts to consolidate power through illegitimate means. The government in exile maintains that the 2020 election results, which showed overwhelming support for civilian rule, remain the only legitimate expression of the people’s will, and any attempt by the military council to hold new elections lacks both legal standing and popular support. This position aligns with the broader democratic movement’s commitment to restoring civilian rule and establishing genuine federal democracy in Myanmar.
