The military council has issued an order demanding the removal of thousands of homes within 8 days for the expansion of No. 4 Main Road in Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region. According to the order issued on July 1, the road will be expanded into an 8-lane highway, requiring the demolition of homes, buildings, structures, and shops that fall within the road boundary by July 8. The military council has issued warning notices to affected residents regarding this forced evacuation.
According to local residents, the affected homes stretch from Danyingone Junction to Hmawbi, encompassing thousands of households. These residences are not encroaching on municipal land but are legally established homes. The military council is demanding the demolition of properties, including those with land grants, citing a 51-foot road boundary expansion. Local residents report that this action by the military council represents oppression against the people and creates significant hardship for civilians, particularly during the rainy season.
The military council is forcing these evictions without any negotiation for compensation. The affected properties include lands with official grants and ancestral properties, which the military council is illegally threatening to demolish through coercion. Since the military coup, the council has frequently engaged in illegal practices nationwide, including seizing people’s homes and compounds under false claims of encroachment, taking land for alleged projects, and forcibly evicting residents by declaring areas as military land. These actions demonstrate a pattern of systematic oppression against civilians, with the military council continuing to violate property rights and forcibly displace residents without proper legal basis or compensation.
