
The military council has announced that they have re-arrested Ma Zwun Pyit Hlaing, who was previously detained on political charges in Hlaing Tharyar Township, Yangon Region, along with those who helped rescue her through an armed intervention. According to the announcement, on July 1, 2023, at around 7:30 PM, two deputy police officers were escorting Ma Zwun Pyit Hlaing, who was detained under Article 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law at the Eastern Police Station in Hlaing Tharyar Township, to the Hlaing Tharyar Township Hospital due to an emergency medical condition.
During the transfer to the hospital, when they reached the entrance of Min Gyi Maha Min Gaung Road in Industrial Zone 2, Hlaing Tharyar Township, two individuals attacked the police escort, shooting at the two deputy police officers and successfully rescued Ma Zwun Pyit Hlaing. In the shooting incident, one deputy police officer was fatally wounded, while a female deputy police officer sustained a gunshot wound to her shoulder. During this incident, Ma Zwun Pyit Hlaing managed to escape from custody.
However, the following morning, the military council announced that they had re-arrested Ma Zwun Pyit Hlaing along with five individuals who had assisted in her rescue in Thanlyin Township, along with weapons and ammunition. This news was simultaneously shared across multiple military-affiliated Telegram channels. The detailed circumstances of their re-arrest and the specific evidence recovered have not been disclosed in the announcement. The military council continues to maintain strict control over information regarding such incidents, while resistance to their rule persists throughout the country.
