
A rescue operation in Hlaing Tharyar Township resulted in the death of one police lieutenant and injury to another officer when a political prisoner, Ma Zun Pyit Hlaing, was freed from police custody. According to both military council reports and local residents, the incident occurred while two police lieutenants were escorting the detainee, who had been arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Law, to the hospital. The rescue operation took place at around 7:30 PM on July 1st near the Industrial Zone 2 on Min Gyi Maha Min Gaung Road.
During the incident, two individuals reportedly attacked the police escorts, resulting in one police lieutenant being fatally shot and a female police lieutenant sustaining a gunshot wound to her shoulder. The political prisoner, Ma Zun Pyit Hlaing, who had been detained under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law at the East Hlaing Tharyar Police Station, was successfully rescued during the operation. Following the incident, the military council forces implemented extensive security measures throughout Hlaing Tharyar Township.
The military council forces conducted guest registration checks and road closures throughout the township during the night. Several young people were reportedly arrested during these operations. At a checkpoint near Thamakon Elephant Camp, combined forces of military, police, and Pyu Saw Htee militia members conducted vehicle inspections, leading to the arrest of a young person allegedly carrying fake identification and driver’s license. Multiple bridges, including the Hlaing Tharyar, Bayintnaung, Aung Zeya, Shwe Pyi Thar, and Pan Hlaing bridges, were closed until midnight as part of the security operation.
The following morning, military council forces officially notified ward administration teams that daytime guest registration checks would be conducted throughout Hlaing Tharyar Township. Local residents reported experiencing significant mobility restrictions due to the heightened security measures, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the area. The military council’s response to the incident has resulted in increased surveillance and security operations, affecting the daily lives of civilians in the township.
