According to a statement from the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck near Mandalay city in the early morning hours of June 27. The earthquake occurred at 3:28 AM, with its epicenter located 25 kilometers east of Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers underground. Officials have confirmed this seismic event as an aftershock of the larger Sagaing earthquake that occurred earlier this year.
Local residents reported that the tremor was distinctly felt in both Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin cities, with Mandalay experiencing particularly noticeable effects. According to one Mandalay resident, the earthquake woke many people from their sleep, describing it as a single, forceful jolt that felt like a push, though the duration was very brief. Similarly, residents of Pyin Oo Lwin confirmed experiencing significant tremors during the event.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has reported that following the major 7.7 magnitude Sagaing earthquake on March 28 this year, nearly 200 aftershocks have been recorded in the region. The impact of the March 28 earthquake caused several buildings in Mandalay to tilt and sustain damage, and as of today, complete demolition and clearing operations for these affected structures have not yet been completed, according to officials responsible for the recovery efforts.
