The military council’s air force conducted an airstrike on Metta Nanda Hospital in Sintguu Township, Mandalay Region, resulting in the death of a new mother and injuries to 12 others, according to the People’s Defense Force (PDF) information officer from Sintguu Township. The attack occurred around 11 PM on June 22, when a fighter jet from Tada-U Air Base targeted the hospital, destroying three buildings including the obstetrics and gynecology ward.
The deceased woman, approximately 30 years old, was from Sedaw Fork Village in Myittha Township and had given birth just two days before the attack. While the mother died instantly, her newborn child survived. Additionally, a 35-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition. Eleven other civilians receiving treatment at the hospital suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The airstrike caused significant damage to the hospital infrastructure, with three buildings, including the maternity ward, being destroyed in the attack.
Metta Nanda Hospital serves as a crucial medical facility for residents from Myittha, Sintguu, and Thabeikkyin areas. The PDF information officer emphasized that the hospital exclusively treats civilians and Buddhist monks, with no revolutionary forces ever receiving treatment there. Despite the military council’s announcement of a ceasefire throughout June due to earthquake relief efforts, they have continued to conduct both ground operations and airstrikes in Sintguu Township, according to local sources. This attack represents another instance of the military council’s ongoing campaign of violence against civilian infrastructure, particularly targeting healthcare facilities that serve local communities.
