A revolutionary fundraising event was held in London, United Kingdom, on June 21 to commemorate the 80th birthday of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The event was attended by more than 1,000 Myanmar nationals residing in the UK, including notable figures such as Kim Aris (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s younger son), Dr. Sa Sa (Union Minister of the National Unity Government), U Maung Maung Aung (Representative to the UK), and Dr. Sasa Ko Ko.
The fundraising event featured the sale of traditional Myanmar food, handicrafts, textiles, and commemorative items. The organizers announced that the proceeds from the event would be donated to support various needs within Myanmar, particularly focusing on internally displaced persons, political prisoners, and revolutionary activities. The event also included performances of traditional Myanmar cultural dances and entertainment programs to celebrate the occasion.
Despite currently being detained by the military council and sentenced to multiple years of imprisonment, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi continues to serve as a spiritual leader for the people of Myanmar. Attendees expressed that such birthday commemoration fundraising events aim to continue supporting initiatives that benefit the people of Myanmar. The event demonstrated the ongoing solidarity of the Myanmar community abroad and their commitment to supporting democratic causes in their homeland through peaceful and constructive means.
