A school in Ingyar village, Pinlebu Township, Sagaing Region, was targeted in an aerial bombardment by the military council forces, resulting in the death of a female teacher and injuries to 10 children, according to local residents and officials from the Pinlebu Township People’s Defense Force. The airstrike occurred on June 20, 2024, at approximately 4:00 PM, when military council forces dropped two 500-pound bombs on the school using fighter aircraft, despite there being no active fighting in the area at the time of the attack.
The bombing resulted in the immediate death of one female teacher at the school, and among the 10 children who were injured, one was just 4 years old. According to a representative from the Pinlebu Township People’s Defense Force, two of the injured children are in critical condition, with their lives hanging in the balance due to the severity of their injuries. The attack has highlighted the ongoing pattern of violence against civilian targets by the military council forces in the region.
Pinlebu Township has been under the control of the National Unity Government (NUG) People’s Defense Forces and allied revolutionary forces since early October 2024. Despite this, the military council continues to conduct frequent airstrikes and artillery attacks against civilian populations in the area, including targets such as schools and other civilian infrastructure. Local residents report that these attacks on civilian targets have become increasingly common, demonstrating the military council’s disregard for civilian safety and international humanitarian law.
