A banner commemorating the 80th birthday of public leader Aung San Suu Kyi was prominently displayed in downtown Myawaddy, a border town in Karen State along the Thai-Myanmar border, according to local residents. The banner was discovered at 7 AM on June 19 in front of Bogyoke Market in the city center, located not far from the Myawaddy Township Police Station and the Immigration Office.
Myawaddy is a city under the control of the Border Guard Force (BGF), which operates under the military council’s authority. The city is administered by the military, police force, and General Administration Department with support from the BGF. Despite ongoing security patrols by military and police forces throughout the city, activists managed to display the birthday banner for Aung San Suu Kyi.
Additionally, the previous day in Three Pagodas Township of Kyainseikgyi District, Karen State, a signboard was erected demanding the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Local sources reported that military and police forces were unable to remove the signboard. These acts of resistance demonstrate the unwavering spirit of the people in their opposition to the military dictatorship.
