The Suu Foundation has announced that public leader Aung San Suu Kyi sustained an injury to her left arm during a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28 while being detained by the military council, and her condition is now concerning. The earthquake damaged the prison facility where she is being held, and there are concerns about her possible death in detention due to the secretive conditions of her imprisonment. Her lawyers, François Zimeray and Catalina de la Sota, expressed serious concerns about her condition, stating that given her age and the extraordinary circumstances of her detention since 2021, her injury could be severe.
The Suu Foundation has called for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has now turned 80, and all political prisoners, stating that this would be an essential step toward peace and reconciliation in Myanmar. The NUG government spokesperson U Nay Bun Latt has revealed that the terrorist military continues to conceal Suu Kyi’s location, and no one has been allowed to know her current condition. The situation has become increasingly concerning as there has been no sight or sound of the State Counsellor for the past three years, with no access to photos, videos, or any form of communication.
U Nay Bun Latt further elaborated that while prison visits are reportedly being accepted regularly, the fact that neither lawyers nor family members are allowed to meet with her is an unacceptable situation. He emphasized that despite the severe earthquake damage to prison facilities, the true extent of what has happened remains unknown to anyone outside the military council. The continued secrecy surrounding her detention and her current medical condition following the earthquake injury has raised serious concerns about her well-being, particularly given her advanced age and the length of her detention. The spokesperson stressed that this situation of complete isolation and lack of transparency regarding the condition of Myanmar’s democratic leader must end immediately.
