Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has criticized the UN Security Council for evading action on Myanmar’s situation and failing to save Myanmar people’s lives. Speaking at the UN General Assembly plenary meeting on June 11, the ambassador emphasized that Myanmar’s current situation poses a significant threat to regional and international peace and security. According to the Global Organized Crime Index, Myanmar ranks as the country with the highest organized crime among all UN member states, with online-based crimes contributing to a worsening human trafficking problem.
The ambassador pointed out that the Security Council is using the number of discussions as an excuse to avoid taking action on Myanmar’s situation, emphasizing that the number of closed-door meetings is not important. Instead, what matters is the Security Council’s swift, effective, and decisive action to save Myanmar people’s lives. According to the UN Human Rights Office, online scam syndicates generate billions of US dollars annually in revenue. The ambassador stressed the urgent need for international intervention to address the root causes of Myanmar’s situation and the rising cross-border organized crime. He noted that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Special Rapporteur, and ASEAN have all confirmed the global implications of the conflict.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that ASEAN alone cannot handle the Myanmar issue, and UN assistance is crucial in implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus. He called for the Security Council to adopt a follow-up resolution that includes effective implementation of Resolution 2669 on Myanmar and establishment of a regular reporting mechanism. The ambassador explained that their demand to stop the transfer and export of weapons, jet fuel, and dual-use items to the military council is not unfounded but based on the experiences of Myanmar people who suffer daily casualties from airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks. He concluded by urging UN member states and the international community to support the Myanmar people’s aspirations for ending the violent military dictatorship and building a federal democratic Myanmar, emphasizing that any solution must be centered on the will and interests of the Myanmar people.
