In Kyauk Chaung village, Nat Maw village tract, Ngarutgone sub-township of Ngapudaw Township in Ayeyarwady Region, a village administrator has fraudulently recruited a young man into military service by promising 8.5 million kyats (85 lakhs) as payment for serving as a substitute recruit. The village administrator Thein Htike, also known as Htike Gyi, sent Maung Aung Seik to the military training batch No. 11 after promising the payment, but neither the young man nor his parents have received any money to date.
According to local residents, Administrator Thein Htike has been collecting 50,000 kyats from each household in the village for military substitute recruitment purposes and has allegedly been using these funds for personal benefit. When Maung Aung Seik’s parents did not receive the promised payment, they filed complaints with the Ngarutgone Township General Administration Department and police station on May 30. However, no action has been taken by the authorities as of now. Local sources report that the administrator has been exploiting his position to collect money from villagers while failing to fulfill his promises to those recruited into military service.
This incident represents a broader pattern of deceptive recruitment practices being employed under the military council’s administration, highlighting the ongoing exploitation of civilians and young people in particular. The practice of collecting money for military substitute recruitment and fraudulent promises has not only affected the socioeconomic conditions of local communities but has also jeopardized the futures of young people who are deceived into military service. The lack of action from relevant authorities in this case demonstrates the current state of law enforcement and civilian protection under military council control, where such exploitative practices often go unchallenged and unpunished, directly impacting the welfare and rights of local communities.
