A monk was injured when the military council forces fired heavy artillery at Dhamma Sukha Monastery and surrounding areas in Hman Cho village, Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, according to a representative from the Seven People Defence Force (SPDF). The incident occurred around 3 PM on May 29, when military council troops based in Chaung-U town indiscriminately fired 120mm artillery shells toward Hman Cho village.
The artillery strikes hit the Dhamma Sukha Monastery and civilian homes, resulting in damage to the buildings and injuries to one monk. According to the SPDF representative, the monk sustained injuries to his thigh but is in stable condition and not critically wounded. Local residents have condemned this deliberate targeting as a war crime, noting that the military council has been intentionally attacking religious buildings and civilian areas.
The military council has frequently targeted civilians and religious buildings throughout Sagaing Region, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries among innocent civilians. Local residents have been forced to flee their homes and live in constant fear of such attacks. These ongoing military actions have created a humanitarian crisis in the region, with many civilians displaced and religious institutions under threat of destruction. The targeting of Buddhist monasteries, which are traditionally considered sanctuaries and centers of community life, represents a particularly egregious violation of both human rights and religious freedom.
