The military council conducted an airstrike on Hsan Hseng Myaing village, the headquarters of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) near the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township, Karen State, during the afternoon of May 28. According to local residents, a child was injured by shrapnel from the bombing during the attack. While most locals had already evacuated the area as war refugees, the child was among the few who remained in the village when the airstrike occurred.
A military council Yak-130 fighter jet carried out the bombing raid at 1:00 PM on Hsan Hseng Myaing village. Earlier that morning, revolutionary forces led by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) had intercepted and attacked a military council column consisting of 72 troops. The resistance forces managed to defeat the entire column, capturing more than 30 soldiers while inflicting numerous casualties. Some of the remaining military troops reportedly fled across the border into Thailand, according to border military sources who confirmed these details.
The Hsan Hseng Myaing area is a key territory controlled by the DKBA and has been a frequent site of clashes between military council forces and revolutionary groups. The military council typically responds with airstrikes when their ground forces suffer losses, and in this incident, innocent civilians became casualties of such retaliatory attacks. Local residents live in constant fear of aerial bombardment and have been forced to seek shelter in refugee camps for their safety. The ongoing conflict has created a humanitarian crisis in the border region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the military council’s aggressive tactics and indiscriminate attacks on populated areas.
