The National Unity Government (NUG) Presidential Office spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw has stated that ASEAN must urgently take action against the terrorist military council’s systematic targeting of civilians. During today’s press briefing, U Kyaw Zaw pointed out that the military council has completely failed to comply with the first point of ASEAN’s five-point peace roadmap regarding the cessation of violence, instead continuing to attack civilians.
He specifically highlighted the May 12 jet fighter bombing of a school in Oat Tain Kwin village in Sagaing Region, which killed at least 24 people, including students and a teacher, while injuring over 100 others, as evidence of the military council’s deliberate targeting of civilians. U Kyaw Zaw warned that ASEAN and the international community should no longer trust the military council’s false promises regarding ceasefires and humanitarian commitments.
According to records from the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Human Rights, between January 2023 and May 12, 2025, the military council conducted nearly 2,700 airstrikes on areas where there was no active fighting. These attacks resulted in over 3,000 civilian deaths and more than 5,000 injuries, including hundreds of children killed. The attacks also destroyed over 240 schools and more than 500 hospitals, clinics, and religious buildings. These statistics demonstrate the military council’s intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure and clear violations of international law, prompting calls for ASEAN and the international community to move beyond mere statements of condemnation and provide practical assistance to protect civilians from aerial attacks.
