The Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee has confirmed that 12 civilians, including the bride Naw Kamwi Paw, were killed when the terrorist military council conducted an airstrike on a wedding ceremony in Kyun Gyi village, Kyaukkyi Township, Bago Region. The airstrike occurred around 9 AM on May 25, 2024, when the terrorist military council’s jet fighter dropped two bombs on the wedding venue. The attack resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians, including two 5-year-old children and the bride, while 37 people, including 13 minors, were severely injured.
The attack caused extensive damage to property, destroying 11 houses, one shop, one hut, one pig pen, one farm tractor, two toilets, and a school compound. According to the KNU, the terrorist military council deliberately targeted the wedding ceremony in Kyun Gyi village, an area with no active fighting and no armed forces presence. The victims of the airstrike were identified as Naw Paw Tah Shu (38), Naw Paw Tha Dar Wah (35), Saw Nay Blu Moo (5), Naw Ju Plee (46), Naw Su Htoo Htoo Aung (5), bride Naw Kamwi Paw (22), Maung Thu Thu (19), Maung Myint Myat Hein (14), Naw Bu La Paw (52), Naw Say Kabo Paw (17), Naw Ay La Paw (40), and Saw Pu Lay (44).
The KNU has stated that this attack on innocent civilians constitutes a war crime by the terrorist military council and violates international human rights laws. Among the wounded are numerous children and elderly people, with some in critical condition requiring urgent medical attention. The international community has strongly condemned these deliberate attacks on civilians and called for accountability for those responsible. This incident represents another example of the military council’s ongoing campaign of violence against its own people, targeting civilian populations with deadly airstrikes even during peaceful celebrations.
