Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, the Union Minister of Education for the National Unity Government (NUG), has issued a directive to temporarily close all schools under NUG’s administration due to the escalating airstrikes by the military council. This directive was issued with primary consideration for the safety of students and teachers across the country. The decision comes as a response to the increasing threat of military attacks on civilian targets, including educational institutions.
Since the military’s unlawful seizure of state power, the National Unity Government has been implementing various methods of interim education to ensure children do not lose their right to education. However, the current situation has become increasingly dangerous as the military council has been conducting airstrikes, using machine guns, and launching artillery attacks on civilian gathering places, including schools and hospitals. These actions constitute war crimes against humanity, as stated in the directive. The military’s deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure has created an environment where safe education has become nearly impossible.
The Ministry of Education under the National Unity Government has instructed all basic education schools, higher education institutions, and vocational training centers to temporarily suspend their operations while safety measures are being implemented. The directive emphasizes the importance of protecting the lives of students, teachers, and civilians while maintaining educational continuity. The ministry has requested all relevant organizations and authorities at various levels to supervise and cooperate in implementing these safety measures. Additionally, they are urged to continue following the policies and guidelines issued by the NUG’s Ministry of Education to ensure uninterrupted learning during this challenging period. The NUG’s spokesperson, U Nay Bun Lat, has confirmed that they are actively seeking alternative methods to provide safe education while avoiding the military council’s airstrikes.
