Ten houses were swept into the river following a riverbank collapse in Yankin Sanra Village, Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyarwady Region, with local residents reporting ongoing risks of further erosion due to strong river currents. The incident occurred around midnight on May 24th. While homes were lost to the river, there were fortunately no reported injuries or casualties from the collapse, according to local residents.
Currently, more than 30 households have been forced to relocate to safer areas due to the continuing risk of riverbank erosion, and emergency assistance is urgently needed. Residents express concern about the possibility of additional riverbank collapses, as heavy rains continue to fall in Nyaungdon Township and river currents remain strong. The combination of intense rainfall and powerful water flow has created hazardous conditions along the riverbank.
Local humanitarian organizations are conducting emergency operations to prevent further riverbank erosion and are providing necessary assistance to affected residents. However, effective riverbank protection measures are proving challenging during the rainy season, and local residents indicate that long-term solutions are needed to address the ongoing erosion issues. The situation continues to pose significant challenges for the affected communities as they cope with displacement and the threat of further collapse.
