An elderly couple was killed instantly when the military council’s artillery shell hit their home in Kachin State’s Mohnyin District. The incident occurred at approximately 5:50 PM on May 24, when Infantry Battalion 389 of the military council, based in Hopin town of Mohnyin District, fired heavy artillery that struck the house of U Chan Maung in Hepa village.
According to local sources, the artillery strike resulted in the immediate deaths of the 62-year-old homeowner U Chan Maung and his 58-year-old wife Daw Khin Pyun. Additionally, 50-year-old Daw Tin Nu sustained severe injuries to both legs and is currently receiving medical treatment at Chaung Wa Township Hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical and life-threatening.
A local resident confirmed that there was no active fighting in the area at the time of the incident, indicating that the military council forces deliberately targeted civilian residential areas with artillery fire. These intentional attacks by the military council against civilians continue to result in casualties and injuries among innocent people, demonstrating an ongoing pattern of violence against the civilian population.
